I think one of the reasons people don't appreciate (apart from fear of being confronted by something different) is the fact that in contemporary art there is no common wisdom of what is good art and what's not and people feel uncomfortable making decisions themselves.

@wkalmar I agree. There are also people that appreciate some contemporary art just because someone famous made it/said so

@bedef Exactly. Also, one of my favorite books "Martin Eden" shows that this is a phenomenon that is not unique to our time.

@wkalmar never heard of it, I'll check it out. Not that hard to believe that people always struggled with having a personal (really personal) opinion
